Sept 9th & 10th at Winchester Dondero Cultural Center
The Asylum Theatre is proud to present COMPLEMENTO by the Colombian playwright Rafael Guizado, translated by his granddaughter and local theatre maker, Gigi Guizado, and featuring a diverse company of local talents. There will be two performances held at the Winchester Dondero Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Drive, Friday, September 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, September 10 at 2 p.m., with a post-matinee audience discussion.
The production is part of an ongoing international development process with the Out of the Wings Festival, a group based at King's College London that showcases plays in translation from throughout Iberia and Latin America via year-round table read, discussions, and theatre events. The Asylum’s Artistic Director, Sarah O’Connell, will direct the work of the 20th-century Colombian master following the successful premiere of his SCHERZO (Dialogue with a Statue), also translated by Resident Playwright Gigi Guizado.
"We are pleased to bring local arts to the world stage, once again, through our collaboration with the Out of the Wings Festival in the UK. Scholars from across the globe have supported Gigi Guizado’s evolution of the script and celebrate our new staging. It is an honor to uplift a local Latina playwright who has gifted this Colombian master's work to a new audience through her translation and to highlight the rich talents in our diverse company of artists,” says O'Connell.
The company includes actors Jose Anthony, Diana Martinez, Angel Mendoza, Jessie Johnson, Jackie Hoopz Lakoudis, Graciela Strahan, and Jacob Sidhom in the title role, with scenic design by Jay Nagle and costume design by Sean Stuart, and stage management by Rebecca Sass.
Out of the Wings (OOTW) was co-founded in 2008 by Catherine Boyle, David Johnston, and Jonathan Thacker, following their collaboration with Royal Shakespeare Company’s acclaimed Spanish Golden Age season. Ms. Boyle will join The Asylum’s audience via zoom for a real-time talkback following the Saturday, September 10 performance.
The Asylum often serves as a global theatre ambassador for southern Nevada through partnerships, including the World English Speaking Theatres (WEST) network established in Kyiv by its Ukrainian collaborators at the ProEnglish Theatre.
Formed in 1996, The Asylum Theatre exists to connect audiences to new work and artists to each other. It is remarkable to serve for over 25 years as one of southern Nevada’s longest-running theatre companies as well as a haven for the development of new ideas, emerging artists, and international partnerships.
